WG1. From Molecules to Life

The Working Group 1 of COMP-HUB revolves around a topic we have defined “from molecules to life”. In the framework of the COMP-HUB programme centered on complexity, it aimed to bring together the most diverse expertises available in the Department, encompassing ideally all the chemical, biological and geological researchers with an interest on life at all levels – past present and future.

The key issues concern how the study of small molecules, biological molecules, macromolecules, performed with the most innovative tools and instruments, can shed light on fundamental mechanisms of living organisms. The research has been applied to microorganisms (bacteria, fungi, algae), plants, animals and humans – no form of life has been neglected. Higher order interactions between organisms, like plant and microbes in agriculture, human microbiomes, ecosystems, or complex behavior, have also been addressed.

If we look at the “keywords” of our research activities – some notable examples appear:

·         use of -omics approaches

·         application of model organisms (yeast, plants, animals)

·         physiology of cardiac phenomena

·         research on bioactive compounds and their relevance for health also as medicines

·         studies of emerging pollutants and their impacts

·         analysis of the roles of organelles in cells

·         discovery of biomarkers for diagnosis and therapy

·         applications of microbiomes

·         functional adaptation to environmental gradients

·         provision of ecosystem services from different organisms

The links with other WG are evident, particularly because sustainability is a target for most of the WG1 researchers.

Over 40 researchers (permanent staff) have joined the group, together with technicians, postdocs and PhD students. Their activity has been documented in publications, talks and dissemination efforts.

Our research in this Working Group is multidisciplinary and interdisciplinary, with international collaborations, and it involves young researchers and students. The results can directly affect our everyday life and their dissemination is not restricted to academia. Many of our fellow citizens have learned from us in open days and other public events.
